STOCKTON COAL MINE, Richard Thomas, Manager.-This mine was opened in 1884. The proprietors own about 2800 acres, including what is under the sea. The mine finds employment for over 300 hands, and the out-put amounts to 850 tons per day. Mr. Thomas took charge in September, 1886. He was born in Aberdare, Wales, in 1850, and was employed as mining student and mine manager in mines at Aberdare, Clydach Vale, Rhondda Valley, North Wales, and Yorkshire till 1886, when he received his present appointment in the colony. Mr. Thomas is a member of the M.U.O.O.F., and of the Freemasons , E.C., St. George. He is married, and is the father of three sons and three daughters. He obtained his certificate of competency as mine manager from the home secretary on the recommendation of the S.W. Board of Examiners in 1876. He is in possession of the St. John s Ambulance Society s meda], given for proficiency in the art of attending to accidents. The directors of the Stockton mine are Mr. Thomas Cowlishaw, Mr. Thomas Kelly, Mr. Geo. C. Loughnan, Mr. Timothy O Sullivan, Mr. Thomas Saywell; the general manager is Mr. J. J. Weston ; and the shipping manager Mr. J. M. Hyde. The seam wrought is the well-known Borehole, which is here deeper than elsewhere in the district. It is twenty-two feet thick, of which eighteen feet are worked in two beds, and is acknowledged to be the richest in quality in the district

RICHARD THOMAS, Undertaker and Cabinetmaker and General Furnishing Warehouseman, was born in Carmarthenshire, Wales, in 1835, and learned his trade there. In 1857 he arrived in the colony, and settled in Kiama, where he remained for three years, afterwards removing to Minmi, and following his trade for three or four years. In 1865 he shifted to Lambton, and in 1871 opened a store for the sale of furniture, and for conducting the undertaking business. With steady work and attention his property and trade have increased with the progress of the town, till now he does about the largest undertaking trade in the Newcastle district, with a good sale in furniture. Mr. Thomas is a member of the Welsh Congregational Church, of which he is a deacon; S.D. in the Masonic Lodge Friendship No. 739, S.C., Lambton; and a member of the G.U.O.O.F. He is a married man and the father of two sons, and is widely known and respected as an honest citizen

Mr. Richard Windeyer Thompson, one of the best known men in the northern district passed away after a long illness. Mr. Thompson was born in Sydney June 18 1832. He was a son of Mr. John Thompson who at various times occupied the position of Deputy Surveyor-General, Acting Surveyor General and Surveyor-General for the Colony of NSW. His mother was a daughter of Mr. Charles Windeyer, first police magistrate in Sydney and formerly reported in the House of Commons....he came to Maitland in 1859 where he resided until his death. Here he controlled the largest business outside Sydney. He represented West Maitland in the Legislative Assembly for three sessions, being finally defeated by Mr. Gillies. Mr. Thompson was an enthusiastic in cricket and many other field sports. He took an active part in the formation of the West Maitland Voluneer Water Brigade and rendered splended service in rescue work at flood time
