Details:
A fatal accident occurred at Stafford, the residence of Mrs. George Dight. Hilton Dight, a fine promising lad in his fifteenth year, son of that lady, left his mother s house in the evening to shoot opossums. He was accompanied by a farm labourer and a little boy and had with him a double barrelled gun which was loaded with duck shot in both barrels. Having fired at an opossum the animal fell wounded but with sufficient life left in it to make back for the tree, which he was in the act of mounting when the rash lad, forgetting in the excitement of the moment that the second barrel still contained deadly charge, seized the weapon by the muzzle with both hands and aimed a blow with the stock at the opposum. In striking against the tree the gun went off and the whole contents of the barrel entering the throat lodged in the spine of the poor youth who fell down a corpse upon the spot. Dr. Glennie, coroner performed an inquest the following morning. The remains to be interred in the family vault at Clifford, the residence of his uncle S. B. Dight
