Details:
A tall well-made handsome young man, who gave his name as Peter Murray, was placed at the bar on suspicion of being a person named Patrick McNamara who, on 7th of August last, escaped from Maitland gaol, where he was awaiting his trial for the wilful murder of his wife. Constable Short being sworn stated – I was on duty yesterday morning in Parramatta street and in consequence of information which I received, I apprehended the prisoner. When I first took him into custody, he denied being McNamara. He said that his name was Peter Murray, that he was a native of Limerick and had been years in the colony. He drew a knife and said I should not apprehend him and that he could beat three contables. When I got the prisoner near the Police Office, he said – Mate, they have been looking after me long enough, but you have caught me and I suppose they will hang me up like a dog. I then confined hm n the watch house.
