John Donnovan, a runaway from the service of Mr. Hart Davis at Hunters River, was next placed at the bar. It appeared that the prisoner was formerly a soldier in the 42nd regiment, and lately transported to this Colony from India. On his arrival he was assigned to the service of Mr. Hart Davis at Hunter s River, from whom he absconded on the 30th September last, and remained for some time working as a free man, under a feigned name at Newcastle, until he was apprehended by the chief constable of that settlement, and forwarded to Sydney to be identified, as he refused to give any satisfactory account of himself. The Bench sentenced him to receive fifty lashes, and to be returned to his service
