Newcastle 1831 - 1845

The A.A. Company took possession of the government coal mines at Newcastle in 1831.
Below is a copy of correspondence from the Colonial Secretary to Sir Edward Parry dated June 1830 followed by a list of some of the Australian Agricultural Company employees and servants in Newcastle, NSW in 1830s and 1840s, most of whom were employed in the mines.

Copy of letter from the Colonial Secretary to Sir Edward Parry, Commissioner to the Australian Agricultural Company

25 June 1830

Sir - I have had the honor of receiving and communicating to the Governor your letter of the 8th of last month, acquainting me for his Excellency's information, that the Governor and Directors of the Agricultural Company have now sent out a superintendent, together with necessary apparatus for working the coal mines at and near Newcastle, according to the original understanding between his Majesty's government and the Company, and stating that not a moment shall be lost on your part, in carrying into execution the intentions of the government and the Company on this head, according to the conditions specified in your letter.

In return, I am directed by his Excellency to inform you, that in furtherance of the instructions of his Majesty's government, he is ready to give you possession of the coal mines now worked by the government at Newcastle, and to afford you all he facilities in his power by convict labour, whenever you will authorise the superintendent to take charge of them.

I am also directed to state, that the several conditions on which the Company are to hold those mines, and such other lands, to the extent in the whole of two thousand acres, as may be selected by you in their name, are not stated by you with sufficient precision, but may be more correctly specified as follows, viz:

1. The Company to have five hundred acres of the coal land at or near Newcastle, including the mines now worked by government.

2. The company may select fifteen hundred acres of additional land on the banks of the river Hunter adjoining the said five hundred acres, or otherwise, provided the same be unlocated.

3. Each allotment to have a liberal water frontage.

4. All possible assistance in convict labour to be granted for working the mines

5. The colonial government to cease working as soon as the Company may be ready to commence

6. The usual rate of quit rent to be charged, according to the surface value of the land for the five hundred acres, and for as much of the fifteen hundred acres as may be coal land, without reference to its value as mine land

7. The quit rent on all such coal land is not to be redeemable

8. The land may be resumed by government if in any year the Company shall raise a less quantity of coals than two thirds of the annual average quantity raised in the three years ending 31st December 1828

9. The government to be entitled in perpetuity to all coal wanted for its own consumption, not exceeding one quarter of the annual produce, to be delivered at the pits mouth at prime coast, which is to be ascertained from the accounts of the Company's Manager

10. No land is to be granted by government during thirty one years , after the date of the present grant, without a special reservation of all coals an coal mines, nor is government during that time to afford assistance in convict labour for the purpose of working any coal mines, to any other company or individual without the previous sanction of the Secretary of State, which however, would probably be granted if the Company were to avail themselves of their monopoly, by imposing an exorbitant price for their coals - E.C. Armitage, James. Arrived per Exmouth 1831. Tried in Leeds 1842. Obtained Ticket of leave for Newcastle District; 1844 Ticket of Leave cancelled for larceny.

Armstrong, Thomas. Arrived per Isabella 1832. Tried in Durham. Occupation miner. Assigned to Company 1832; In December 1835 charged with robbing Sarah Sharrod at Newcastle. Discharged from Court; In Feb 1836 charged with drunkenness and disorderly conduct at Newcastle. Arrested by Constable Rouse and sentenced to 50 lashes. Died in Newcastle in 1844.

Barber, John (/Jacob), arrived per Minstrel. Tried in Chester. Miner assigned to A. A. Co in Port Stephens. At the hospital, Newcastle in 1828.

Barker, John. Arrived per Isabella 1832 Tried in Durham. In 1837 assigned to A. A. Co. in Newcastle. Witness in Campbell / Grayson court case; Ticket of leave holder 1844

Bate/ Baite, Joseph. Arrived per John 1837. Assigned to A. A. company 1837

Bawdon (Bowden), Samuel. Arrived per Neva 1833 Tried in Cornwall. In January 1838 Charged with neglect of work when he left the pit after getting only 7 skips of coal; Aged 25. 1/4', brown complexion; brown hair, hazel eyes, blue ring middle finger ® hand. Absconded from A. A. Co. Newcastle. Sentenced to 2mths on treadmill in Sydney for absconding; 1843 Assigned to Australian Agricultural Co. Convicted of drunkenness and disorderly conduct at Church muster. Sentenced 10 days confinement in cells. 1845 Granted Ticket of leave

Bellingham, Edward. Arrived per Lloyds 1837. Tried in Salop. In June 1842 assigned to A. A. Company when he assaulted Robert Greenwood. Sentence 6mths in irons; October 1843 Assigned to Australian Agricultural Co. Convicted of drunkenness and disorderly conduct at Church muster. Sentenced 10 days confinement in cells. 1847 Obtained ticket of leave for Newcastle district

Bennett, William. Arrived per John 1837. Tried in Lancaster December 1841. Assigned to Australian .Agricultural Co mine. Charged by Superintendent with being drunk at Sunday Muster 7 days confinement.

Bewick, Thomas. Tried in Durham. Arrived per Bengal Merchant 1835. Assigned to A. A. company in Newcastle. Ticket of leave Port Stephens 1845.

Birrell, James, Arrived per Richard Webb. From Scotland. Employed by A. A. Co as miner. Promoted to Assistant Overman however in conflict with company in 1840s.(45)

Blainey (Blayney), William. Arrived per Susan 1834. Tried Hull Citadel CM 1837. Assigned to Australian Agricultural Company. Charged with disobedience of orders and insolence; On light duties on order of Doctor. Sentenced to 28 days in cells after he refused to go to the pit as ordered

Bluitt, Patrick. Arrived per Brampton 1823 Tried at Waterford City. Assigned to A. A. company Newcastle. Ticket of leave 1843 for Newcastle

Bond, Robert. Arrived per Marquis of Huntley 1830. Tried at Preston 1833. Charged by Mr. Henderson with ill treating a fellow servant in the mine. Admonished and discharged; 1835 - Assigned to Australian Agricultural Company. Charged with drunkenness with Jack Meredith and John Dunivan. Sentenced to 28 days in the cells

Bradley, Richard 1841 - Attached to Australian Agricultural mine. Charged with refusing to work. (Oil wheels of wagons). Sentenced 14 days in cells

Brennan, Martin. Arrived per Java 1833. Tried in Kilkenny. Apprehended after absconding from A. A. Company. Sentenced to 50 lashes for absconding. Obtained ticket of leave for Newcastle district 1845

Chandler, John. Arrived on the Strathfieldsaye. 1843 - Drowned in the well near the engine of the old coal pit. Assigned servant of Australian Agricultural Company

Chainey (Cheyney), Charles. Arrived per Prince George 1837. Tried in Kent 1835. Assigned to A. A. Company. Charged with disobedience of orders and refusing to work. Afraid to go down the pit as he had never been before. James Steele and Alex Brown offered to go down the pit with Charles Cheyney before they charged him with refusing to work. Cheyney admonished and discharged

Clish, John. Arrived per Bengal Merchant 1835. Tried at Durham. In October 1844 - Elderly. Ticket of leave holder in employ of Aust. Agricultural Co. charged with being drunk and assaulting William Barker with a stone. 14 days bread and water and cancel T of L; December 1844 Seriously injured when he was entering the pit and a pick fell from above

Clerk, Charles 1844 - Assigned to A. A Co.. Charged with drunkenness. 14 days solitary confinement on bread and water.

Colclough, William. Arrived per Westmoreland 1835 Tried at Stafford 1835 - Sentenced to 1 week solitary confinement for drunkenness in1837 - Sentenced to 2mths in Sydney gaol for absconding. 1837 - Charged with feigning sickness. Pownall, Thomas. Arrived per Bengal Merchant 1836. Tried at Chester 1844. Granted Ticket of leave Port Stephens. 1837 - Charged with refusing to work. Sentenced to 2mths hard labour in Sydney. 1847 - Ticket of Leave cancelled for having been committed to take his trial for stealing

Prendergast, Richard. Arrived per St. Vincent 1837 Cork City 1837 - Charged with robbery of board the steamer Sophia Jane. Remanded.

Rawson, James. Arrived per Asia 1825. Tried at Stafford. In 1826 indicted for pirating the brig Gurnet. The brig was cut from moorings and then abandoned 1/2 mile from Newcastle after men were unable to manage her. Acquitted. Richards, John. Arrived per Royal Sovereign 1835 Tried in Cornwall. In 1842 Sentenced to 14 days in cells for absenting himself without permission. 1837 - Charged with absconding from Australian Agricultural Company by William Croasdill. Sentenced to 14 days in Newcastle gaol. 1838 - Charged with preferring a frivolous and vexatious charge against his employers A. A. Company. Guilty. Sentenced to 28 days solitary confinement

Ridley, Robert. Arrived per Isabella 1832. Tried at Durham.; Miner assigned to A. A. Co in 1832. Died in Sydney General Hospital in 1844

Riley, John. Arrived per Phoenix 1828. Tried in London. Assigned to Australian Agricultural Company. Charged with drunkenness and insolence to Barracks master

Sanderson, John. Arrived per Lady Nugent 1835. Tried at Yorkshire. In February 1837 with Thomas Paul and Francis Shuter, charged with disorderly conduct. No evidence. Case dismissed; April 1837 - Assigned to Australian Agricultural Company. Charged with absconding and sentenced to 50 lashes; January 1838 - 5 4 1/2'; ruddy; brown hair, hazel eyes; lost front upper tooth, nose a little cocked; woman MS on upper, flower pot, two birds inside lowr (l) arm; top of middle finger (l) hand contracted; woman 4 birds etc on lwr (r) arm; Absconded from A. Schofield (Scholfield), Edward. Arrived per John 1837. Tried in Lancaster. In 1837 Assigned to A. A. Company. Charged with absconding. 2nd offence. Remanded; Discharged from Newcastle gaol in 1837; December 1838 - Coal miner aged 22. Tried Lancashire. Absconded from service to A. A. Co. since Dec 4; In 1847 T/L holder. Charged with drunkenness, however after having seizure in Court was discharged

Scholes, John. Arrived per Lady Kennaway 1836. Tried in Lancaster. Miner assigned to A. A. company; 13 June 1837 Sentenced to 7 days solitary confinement; 30 June Assigned to A. A. Company. charged with refusing to work. Sentenced to 50 lashes, 25 of which to be inflicted on the breech. James Steele witness

Simcox, Simon. Arrived per Camden 1833. Tried in Shropshire. In 1833, occupation Miner, assigned to A. A. Company; November 1835 - Assigned to Australian Agricultural Company at Newcastle. Charged with neglect of work after he left the pit before he finished his work Sentenced to 50 lashes; In 1845. Employed by E. Turner (Maitland) Witness in Court case of W. Bossley; 1845 - Ticket of leave cancelled for prevarication; 1846 - Obtained ticket of leave for district of Maitland; Married 17 year old Mary Trimby in Maitland in 1846.

Stephenson, Bartholomew. Arrived per Isabella 1832. Tried in Durham. Miner assigned to A. A. Co in 1832. Ticket of leave granted for district of Newcastle in 1844

Toohey, Daniel. Arrived per Waterloo in 1836. In 1841 charged by Superintendent with being drunk at Sunday Muster 14 days confinement

Walker, Emanuel. Arrived per Lady Kennaway 1836. Tried at Lancaster Admonished and discharged on a charge of disobedience of orders and appearing at muster in a filthy state

Walker, James. Arrived per Prince Regent 1827. Tried at Yorkshire. In 1838 description 55', ruddy compl. Brown hair, dark brown eyes; absconded from A. A. Company since May 9. Apprehended.

Wellwood, William. Arrived per Burrell 1830. In 1844 - Charged with drunkenness. 14 days solitary confinement on bread and water.1844 - Assigned servant of Aust. Agricultural Co. committed to trial for robbing dray of Charles MacDonald.
