He was employed as Surgeon-Superintendent on the convict ship Pekoe to New South Wales in 1840.

He on the list of Surgeons of the Royal Navy who were unfit for service in 1841, however was appointed to the Isabella Watson to Van Diemen's Land which departed Dublin 1 May 1842 and arrived in Van Diemen's Land on 3 August 1842.

He was employed on the Cadet to Van Diemen's Land in 1844. The Cadet departed Dublin 9 April 1844 and arrived in Van Diemen's Land on 24 August 1844. He kept a Medical Journal on the voyage of the Cadet from 15th April 1844 to 3rd September 1844.

Robert Bower was on the list of Surgeons of the Royal Navy who were unfit for service in 1855.

M.D. Marisch College University of Aberdeen 1815.
