Paterson Robert Park,
owner of Cardoness estate experienced a set back in 1843 when his barn and a
large quantity of wheat and barley were totally destroyed by
fire that originated through carelessness in burning straw
near the barn. The district had already
been through a difficult dry summer, the water on the lower
part of the Paterson river had been unwholesome for some
time and the want of grass and water had been severely felt
in the upper districts. The rain that filled the river came
too late to save the crops. The corn was looking bad and
tobacco crops were few. Those who had managed to raise crops
would have been certain to realize a high price.
As well as his
agricultural pursuits Dr. Park continued with his medical
duties. In October 1844 he performed a post mortem
examination on the body of Richard Bryham at Haughton
on the Upper Paterson. Park found that the lungs of the
deceased were saturated with blood and that he had died from
an acute inflammation. Alexander Park died 14 April
1888
