Details: Sir Arthur Hodgson - Pastoralist. Born 29 June 1818 Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, Eng., son of Rev. Edward and Charlotte, daughter of Francis William Pemberton, Married 30 March 1842 Eliza daughter of Sir James Dowling. Died 24 Dec. 1902 at Clopton House, near Stratford-on-Avon, Eng. C. of E. Ed. Eton 1828-33. Entered navy; midshipman in HMS Canopus on China station 1833-37; at Corpus Christi Coll., Cambridge, 1837-38; to Syd. 1839. Leased Cashiobury in New Eng. dist. With Gilbert Eliott took up Eton Vale, Darling Downs, Sept. 1840; struggled for 10 years, then prospered. By 1874 the property had been converted from leasehold to 90,000 acres freehold, had 83,000 sheep and returned nearly £ 20,000 profit. General superintendent of Aust. Agric. Co. 1856-61. Dir Bank of Qld 1863-64. Travelled Eng. and Europe 1862-67; settled Eng. 1870; bought Clopton estate nr Stratford-on-Avon 1873 and lived life of country squire, becoming sheriff of Warwickshire 1881-82 and mayor Stratford-on-Avon 1883-88. CMG 1878; KCMG 1886. Represented Qld at exhibitions Lond., Paris, Vienna. On Darling Downs, had been unofficial leader of the Pure Merinos and centre of polite society. Member N. Aust. Club. Prime mover of Moreton Bay and N. Dists Separation Assn. MLA for Clarence and Darling Downs 29 Jan. 1858-11 April 1859; for Newcastle 14 June 1859-10 Nov. 1860. In Qld, MLA for Warrego 1868-69; Sec. for Public Works and Goldfields 1868; Col Sec. 1869.
