Details: Lewis Wolfe Levy - Businessman and pastoralist. Born 13 June 1815 London, son of Benjamin Wolfe, merchant, and Martha, nee Levy; Married in 1845 to Julia, d. Samuel Solomon. Died 25 Jan. 1885 Syd. Jewish. Arr. Syd. 1840. Soon entered business in Maitland. To Tamworth 1846 where bought land and established flourishing general store; about this time also became partner with cousins Samuel and David Cohen in Maitland mercantile firm, David Cohen & Co.; returned Maitland 1854 and became driving force behind firms expansion; to Syd. 1862 but remained active in firm s affairs. From mid-1870s occupied positions in public company s. Chairman Hunter R New Steam Navigation Co.; dir Newcastle Wallsend Coal Co., Aust. Gaslight Co., United Insurance Co., Commercial Banking Co. of Syd., Australasian Steam Navigation Co. Also acquired pastoral interests: by 1871 held Yarraman on Liverpool Plains and was partner in 7 other runs. Dir Prince Alfred Hosp. and Industrial Blind Institution. Pres. Macquarie Street Synagogue 1862-74, 1876-77; on bd Syd. Hebrew School. Appointed to LC as representative of Jewish community. Estate valued at over £245,000MLA for Liverpool Plains 9 Jan. 1871-3 Feb. 1872; for W. Maitland 4 Aug.-28 Nov. 1874. MLC 10 Dec. 1880-25 January 1885.
