Details: Dennis Horrigan a bullock driver and Andrew McIntosh a stockman, both in government service, charged with cruelly to a government bullock which caused it death. William Eckford, Michael Wright, James Jackson, James Otway (soldier of the Buffs) gave evidence as to the treatment of the bullock.....I saw a loaded cart with two bullocks yoked to it, one a black bullock, the other a red one; the red bullock seemed to get along with considerable difficulty. When abreast of the Commissariat stores it stopped for more than quarter of an hour during which time the driver was beating it on the nose, legs, and different parts of the body without ceasing. The bullocks head hung down, the nose almost touching the ground; I remarked to two of my comrades standing near on the cruelty of the proceeding. In about a quarter of an hour, the bullocks again moved slowly on but opposite the prisoners barracks they again stopped, when similar blows were inflicted and some person came from the barracks and assisted the driver to get them along. I do not know the men. The driver was a young man, undersized. Jacob Bray and Samuel Mummery, soldiers in the Buffs, corroborate the testimony of James Otway. Dennis Horrigan here admits that he was the driver of the cart in question. Thomas Harrison watchman at the lumber yard, states - I did not particularly notice any of the working oxen when they were brought into the lumber yard previous to being driven out for the night but when McIntosh was taking them out he called my attention to one of them which was bleeding at the nose and mouth. James Crofts states - I was walking near the cedar ground and saw McIntosh driving the bullocks along at a great rate, he had a whip in one hand and a stick in the other with which he was urging them on, a red one particularly; It appeared to me they were driven much faster than there was any necessity for. Mr. Dixon, Superintendent states - I saw McIntosh driving the bullocks along as stated and called to him to desist but he either would not or did not hear me. James Cook, night stockman, states - On Monday night the bullock that died did not feed whilst his companion did very heartily they were yoked together as is the custom till they get used to the run. Dennis Horrigan and Andrew McIntosh remanded for investigation

Details: Richard Edwards per ship Grenada, in government service, charged with disobedience of orders. Mr. James Crofts, keeper of the gaol states - This morning I saw the prisoner who is a wards man at the gaol, in the act of handing up some fire through one of the windows to a prisoner confined in an upper room, by means of a cord which had been let down for that purpose. This is a practice which I have strictly forbid as it endangers the safety of the gaol and it is only a few days since that the gaol was partially on fire from that cause. The prisoner is well aware of my orders on this head, and must have been conscious at the time that he was acting in defiance of them. The prisoner expresses contrition for the offence says, he was not aware of its being contrary to orders. Richard Edwards sentenced to 25 lashes

Gaol, states - On Saturday evening the prisoner who is one of the water carriers at the gaol was absent. I went in search of him and found him drinking at Cheers House; I reported it to the Chief Constable, requesting him to put Fox in the watch house. The prisoner did not return to the gaol before yesterday and his face was then much cut and bleeding. The prisoner makes no defence. Sentenced to 50 lashes

Details: John Smith in service of government charged with neglect of work. Mr. James Crofts, states - The prisoner with others belonging to his gang were sent about 10 or 12 days ago to plaister and white wash the gaol. I pointed out to him what was to be done. They worked well the first day; the next Smith asked me for a task, which I refused, telling him it was the Government regulation to work from morning till night, upon which Smith observed I should get nothing by it in the long run. He then began to work in a very careless manner, cursing and swearing all the while. He and his assistants took two days to white wash the cells....William McDonald being duly sworn states - I have white washed the gaol at different periods during the last ten years. With good brushes aI have white washed the range of cells in two hours - it never took more than four hours when I have had slight repairs to make. It makes a deal of difference between hair and grass brushes as to time and appearance, it would take just double the time with a grass brush to what it would with a hair one. The prisoner in his defence denies the gaolers statement, says it is impossible to do the work in the time specified by MacDonald. John Smith sentenced to 30 lashes
