JESSE HANNELL, Superintendent of Nobbys Lighthouse, was born in Sydney, and in 1823 settled in Newcastle. Educated at the old Cathedral Church School, be, at the age of twenty-five years, entered the Police Force, served for eight years, and resigned to open a grocery business. In 1857 he was appointed superintendent of Nobbys Lighthouse. In this position Mr. Hannell has greatly distinguished himself both for carefulness and bravery. It will be in the memory of many people that it was Mr. Hannell who during the terrible storm of 1866, when the ill-fated Cawarra foundered, gave orders to his son Henry to launch their boat and to endeavour to save the one passenger who alone remained of the wreck, and who was seen struggling in a fearful sea. Accompanied by Messrs. Johnson and Francis, they put out to sea, and at the imminent risk of death saved the survivor. Away from this altogether, Mr. Hannell has on many occasions been the means of saving life, and he is justly appreciated by mariners and others for his good qualities. He is married, is the father of thirteen children-six of whom are living-and belongs to the Church of England
