Correspondence to the Sydney Monitor by E.S. Hall - Governor Darling despatched two vessels, namely, a man of war under the command of Captain Stirling, and a colonial vessel under the command of Mr. Hicks (Lieutenant R. N. on half-pay) to make a settlement there. Mr. Hicks parted company with Captain Stirling soon, after they left Port Jackson, and arrived safe at Port Essington,, which harbour he found to be extremely eligible in all respects for a settlement, being spacious, deep, and sheltered ,the shore being so bold on the eastern tide as to permit the vessels to lie close alongside the banks. From the remain of fires and other appearances, it was evident that the Malays in the fishing season visited the place, the Port affording abundance of trepang of the three qualities, especially of the black sort, which is the most valuable. Mr. Hicks lay there for some time, wondering what had become of Captain Stirling, when a boat casually approaching the mouth of the harbour, he learnt from the crew, that the latter had arrived safe some weeks previously at Port Raffles, a few miles to the West of Port Essington. Mr. Hicks immediately weighed anchor and went to Port Raffles and there found Captain Stirling, and the new settlement already in good progress .Mr. Hicks was requested by the Authorities there, not to publish the circumstance of his having found Port Essington, as the man of war had not been, able to find it. And as it was then considered there could be no great difference between Port Raffles and Port Essington in the way of trade as the first essay, Captains Stirling and deemed it imprudent to re-embark the stores and troops and proceed to the latter place. Thus, Sir, Port Raffles became established by the British Government in lieu of Port Essington, although a port inferior to the latter in everything that makes a new trading settlement valuable, and particularly inferior in the main point for which Melville Island had been unhappily established
