On one occasion bushrangers stuck up Mr. Edward Hely sen., while proceeding to his home at Rathmines, beyond Toronto. The bushrangers took a silver mounted pistol from him on that occasion. Mr. Hely although a man of undoubted courage being compelled to surrender to superior numbers. Within six days he was again robbed. On this occasion he heard the bushrangers intended paying him a visit, and had lain down upon a couch in his room, with a loaded gun on the table and a loaded pistol on the mantelshelf. Suddenly a man stepped on to the verandah and through the open door covered Mr. Hely with a pistol, while a confederate approached and first fired off the gun from the verandah and then coolly annexed the pistol quietly remarking that he now had a pair.
