WILLIAM IRVINE COULTER, Butcher, was born in the Hunter River district in 1843. He received his early training in Hexham, where his father was master of the national school. In 1858 the family purchased land in Gosford, and forthwith set themselves to fruit growing and farming. This continued till the year 1861. About 1860 Mr. Coulter established a butcher s business in Gosford, which is still being carried on. He is not ambitious of municipal fame, and all efforts to get him to be a candidate for a councillorship have been futile. He has identified himself with local sports and serves on the regatta committee. In 1873 Mr. Coulter married the daughter of Mr. James McGrath of Bankstown. The year 1886 saw him contract a second marriage with the daughter of Mr. Chatham of Sydney. He is the father of two sons and two daughters, and is a Roman Catholic
