THOMAS HENRY BOWER, Plumber and Gasfitter, John-street, was born in 1816 in Herefordshire, and educated and learned his trade in the city of Oxford. For seven years he was occupied in farming pursuits in Oxfordshire but gave that up in 1874 and came to Sydney. He removed to Murrurundi, where he remained for two years, and then settled in Singleton in his present establishment. Mr. Bower s business is the principal one of its kind in Singleton, but is not confined to the town, as large contracts are undertaken around the district, and even in remote localities. He has extensive premises, and frequently employs as many as twelve hands. He is held in high esteem by his fellow townsmen both as a master tradesman and a citizen, and was elected in 1886 an alderman of Singleton, in which position he saw the -necessity for a more economical expenditure of the ratepayer s money, and for opposition to the duplication of municipal reserves. He is a member of the English Freemasons, having been past provincial grand sword bearer of Oxford in 1871, also P.P.G.M. Hunter River District M.U.O.O.F., and a director of the order in New South Wales. He is also secretary of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade, and R.A.O.B. He is a member of the Church of England, is a married man, being the father of one son and two daughters, and though not one of our oldest settlers, has already made himself very useful by his natural energy, practical knowledge, and sound judgment in all matters affecting the well-being of the community
