Details: On Tuesday, the 2nd instant, a farmer named Thomas Ackhurst, residing at Hexham, was injured on the temple by a kick from a mare. It would appear that, his son George Ackhurst, was leading the mare when he came behind her, and struck her on the rump with a stick - the mare made a kick at him but missed. His son told him to go away, but he stepped down behind the mare to pick up a stick, when she struck out with her hind foot and caught him on the temple. He was at once attended by Dr. Bowker, of Newcastle, and Dr. Bolton of East Maitland. He died on Tuesday, the 16th instant, having lingered for a fortnight. An inquest was held at the Wheat- sheaf Inn, Hexham, on Wednesday the 17th instant; but in the absence of medical testimony was adjourned until Thursday. Deceased, it is said, was of intemperate habits, and when in liquor fool-hardy, though not so at the time of the accident. Verdict : Died from injuries sustained by the kick of a mare.
