Ship: Henry Porcher 1840
Date: 21 February 1840
Place: -
Source: State Records Online Shipping List
Details: Summary of voyage by the Agent for Immigration - The ship arrived in a very good state of health. The people were of a very fair description but had too many young children attached to them and in consequence of that and their pecularly avaricious and suspicious dispositions, which in spite of all the Presbyterian Ministers of the town could say to them, induced them to refuse fair wages and consequently many were turned out of the barracsk whilst others remained for an indefinite period. The Surgeon stated that Divine Service was performed every Sunday. When the weather did not permit on deck it was done by the people themselves in the Gaelic language in the tween decks. There was a school started very soon after putting to sea.Watches of the male adult emigrants were on deck the same as the seamen whilst going throught the tropics. Dancing and music were encouraged in the evenings. The working of the ship kept the emigrants in exercise. Their behaviour was exemplary.
