SCHOOL IN 1852

CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOLS

On Tuesday, the 8th June, a most delightful treat was given by the Lord Bishop of Newcastle to upwards of 400 of the children of these schools at his lordship's residence, Morpeth. The children arrived from East and West Maitland, Morpeth, Bolwrara, and Clifden, and at 2pm the Bishop, attended by most of the resident clergy, proceeded to the school house, which was crowded with the children and their parents. After singing a hymn, rewards were given to those children who had shown most exemplary conduct and constant attendance. On leaving the school the Bishop was greeted with three hearty cheers, and then all proceeded to the lawn in front of the house, where tables were spread, and a most liberal supply of tea and cake was distributed; after which a grand scrambling for oranges afforded good amusement to all present. The children then passed in rotation before the Bishop, who presented to each a book, according to proficiency, and another supply of cake, fruit, and sweetmeats took place. The proceedings closed by the whole company singing the National Anthem. All retired highly gratified by the kindness of their chief pastor. Maitland Mercury 12 June 1852
